<p style="text-align:center"><em> –Ken Robertson</em></p>

<h2>About all those possibilities.</h2>

<p>Here I am, watching it snow outside, hugging my warm coffee mug while I write. It’s March now but it still seems far away from Spring. </p>

<p>I did this painting a while ago in airbrush on canvas. Looking at it today makes me feel warm inside and out. The golden light. The peaceful sound of the waterfall. The <strong>possibilities</strong> in that pan. The miner just knows what he is looking for and that he will find it. Maybe not in this pan, but the next one. Or the next. There’s something lofty about that sense of expectation.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Some may scoff at the silly old fool for wasting his time and think the odds are low he will find anything at all. But they just don’t get it.</p>

<p>Author Mandy Hale wrote, <strong>“When nothing is certain, anything is possible.”</strong></p>

<p>Never let your fear decide your fate. There’s gold out there whether it’s in head or heart or goals or dreams. Today I dream of Spring and all the possibilities.</p>

<h2 style="text-align:center"><em><strong>“More gold has been mined from the thoughts of men than has been taken from the earth.”</strong></em><strong> </strong></h2>

<p>I first discovered the art of airbrushing by sneaking looks at those old pin-ups hanging on the walls in auto repair shops and work site break rooms. Varga girls. Old calendars. Of course as a boy I thought I wanted to learn how to do that. I was inspired&#8230;</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>

<p class="p1">This was my first real airbrush illustration job. Not exactly a pin-up. I had airbrushed other things before like flames on cars and all kinds of things on motorcycle gas tanks and helmets, but more as a hobby until this assignment in 1988 or so. Video Treasure Chest, a point of sale scratch-off game for now pretty non-existent video stores. It was still just VCRs back then. Maybe they will come back someday like vinyl records. Right after the 8 track tape revival.</p>
<p class="p1">Anyway, then I got the fever for it. I got better at it. I was an airbrushing machine. I painted anything and <em>on</em> everything. I even painted a neighbor&#8217;s baby bump so she could surprise her doctor for Halloween. Scandalous! I knew then I had a problem. See the scene of the crime below:</p>
<p><figure id="attachment_815" style="width: 550px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><a href="https://i2.wp.com/www.gary-whitley.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/painting-belly72.jpg"><img data-attachment-id="815" data-permalink="https://www.gary-whitley.com/the-joy-of-airbrushing/painting-belly72/" data-orig-file="https://i2.wp.com/www.gary-whitley.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/painting-belly72.jpg?fit=550%2C510&amp;ssl=1" data-orig-size="550,510" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;orientation&quot;:&quot;1&quot;}" data-image-title="painting belly" data-image-description="&lt;p&gt;Painting neighbor&#8217;s belly&lt;/p&gt;
" data-medium-file="https://i2.wp.com/www.gary-whitley.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/painting-belly72.jpg?fit=300%2C278&amp;ssl=1" data-large-file="https://i2.wp.com/www.gary-whitley.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/painting-belly72.jpg?fit=550%2C510&amp;ssl=1" class="wp-image-815 size-full" src="https://i2.wp.com/www.gary-whitley.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/painting-belly72.jpg?resize=550%2C510" alt="Painting neighbor's belly" width="550" height="510" srcset="https://i2.wp.com/www.gary-whitley.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/painting-belly72.jpg?w=550&amp;ssl=1 550w, https://i2.wp.com/www.gary-whitley.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/painting-belly72.jpg?resize=300%2C278&amp;ssl=1 300w" sizes="(max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px" data-recalc-dims="1" /></a><figcaption class="wp-caption-text">Crime scene photo. I was caught orange-handed.</figcaption></figure></p>
<p class="p1">Anyway, Photoshop eventually replaced most conventional airbrushing for print media and I have been rehabilitated, but I still do it on some art for backgrounds and large areas. Who knows, maybe I&#8217;ll do some pin-ups next&#8230;</p>
